This presentation focues on an ongoing research and forthcoming book I am developing together with Professor Francesca Frassoldati. The research is an extensive exploration of how Chinese housing has evolved as a cultural, economic, and political construct over the past four decades. The presentation shocases a vast collection of case studies—from mass-produced apartment compounds and collective housing units to experimental co-living projects and suburban gated communities—organized according to emerging architectural trends and socio-spatial paradigms in contemporary china. Rather than reading Chinese housing through a single lens of typology or policy, the presentation proposes a plural interpretation of domestic environments as active landscapes of negotiation between tradition and modernization, public and private, standardization and individuality. Each case study situates housing as an interface between urban governance, market speculation, and everyday life, tracing how architectural forms both mirror and mediate China’s social transformations. The presentation, hosted within the China Room Seminar Series at the Politecnico di Torino, was followed by a discussion with doctoral researchers from Politecnico and Tsinghua University. The dialogue emphasized the importance of comparative research and critical cartography in understanding the multilayered relationship between architecture, ideology, and habitation in contemporary China.
