The 4th year “Integrated Design Studio” is an advanced architectural design studio with major emphasis on an architectural design project that uses previously learned skills through synthesizing user requirements, regulatory requirements, site conditions, accessible design, and consideration of environmental impacts. The proposed site for this studio is located in the historical district of Barriera di Milano within the metropolitan area of Turin in Italy. With a long history of changes and transformations, from a glorious past of industrial development to a rapid process of and gentrification, Barriera di Milano clearly represents the high complexity of contemporary environmental and social transformations happening in consolidated urban environments. Partially grown as a residential neighborhood, hosting the FIAT workers, nowadays Barriera di Milano requires new resilient strategies and civic experimentations to host emerging multicultural and diverse forms of community making. Connection with local architects and universities will provide access to data and sites for developing a proposal speculative of the future but coherent with the present.
